Project description

The complex known as Ex Granaio Gregoriano, located in Rome, in Piazza della Repubblica at number 10, borders Piazza della Repubblica, the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, the Baths of Diocletian and Via Cernaia. Originally part of the Baths of Diocletian, this structure still retains traces of its ancient grandeur, especially in the imposing Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri. Currently, the complex is used for purposes related to university education and related activities.

The total net area of the complex is about 4,400 square meters, while the gross area is about 5,200 square metres, with an external area of about 400 square metres. Roma Tre University has included in its budget the restructuring and refunctionalisation of this complex, providing for the reorganisation of spaces for low-impact accommodation purposes and the creation of spaces for reception and orientation during events and conferences.

This reuse project aims to reconcile the conservation of the historical and cultural heritage with an enhancement that is compatible and respectful of the building. The conservative approach to technical restoration involves giving equal importance to visible and non-visible elements of the structure, such as external surfaces, floors, trusses and walls.

The main interventions planned will concern the individual plans of the complex:

  • RAISED FLOOR: This plan will be transformed into a point of orientation and welcome for the faithful, offering support for Jubilee events and acting as a point of reference and meeting point for visitors to the city.
  • FIRST FLOOR: Comfortable and functional housing units will be built here to accommodate faithful and pilgrims during the Jubilee year, equipped with all the necessary comforts. In addition, there will be a common space used as a "living room" and an auditorium for events related to the Holy Year.
  • SECOND FLOOR: This plan will host spaces for conferences, public meetings and moments of prayer, complementary to the spiritual places of the Jubilee network.

The main objective of these activities is to offer a welcoming and functional environment for visitors during the Jubilee, while respecting the historical and cultural character of the complex.
