Caput Mundi: Restoration of the Hemicycles of Piazza del Popolo
Implementing party
Project description
The conservation project will focus on the restoration of the two hemicycles, the related fountains and the sculptural apparatus located in the square. The restoration of the travertine roofs and the general maintenance of the brick curtain will be included in the interventions.
The preliminary activities will relate to the verification of the sculptures that adorn the hemicycles in order to evaluate their integrity. The restoration of stone surfaces and metal elements will include consolidation, chemical and mechanical cleaning, biocidal treatment, verification, removal and reconstruction of non-functional grouting. The metal connections will be examined and possibly replaced, with a consequent aesthetic revision of the entire complex, including the application of anti-graffiti measures.
As regards the fountains, the waterproofing layer of the water basins will be restored, the condition of the screeds will be checked and any damage will be sealed. Washing, localised consolidation, extraction of soluble salts, disinfection, weeding, re-grouting and, if necessary, replacement of damaged elements will be carried out on the brick walls. Furthermore, verification will be carried out on the functioning of the water systems and the artistic lighting of the two fountains.
This conservation project aims to restore and preserve the integrity of the structures, sculptures and fountains, ensuring their long-term functionality and protection.
