Monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi
Implementing party
Project description
The intervention consisted in the restoration of the equestrian monument dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi at the Gianicolo. Created by the sculptor Emilio Gallori and inaugurated in 1895 on the highest point of the hill, the monument was demolished by a lightning bolt in September 2018, revealing defects in the structure of the podium, composed of blocks and granite slabs.
The restoration project, under the supervision of technicians from the Capitoline Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, was carried out in two phases. First, a campaign of historical-archival, geognostic, geomorphological, structural and environmental investigation was carried out to ascertain the causes and consequences of the damage caused by lightning in 1944, 1971 and lastly in 2018, in order to develop an effective system for the protection of the work.
The second phase, which was more operational, involved the consolidation of the inner wall of the base, the reassembly of the dislocated blocks, the reconstruction and repositioning on the western façade of the granite slab with the bas-relief of the lion, broken in two and detached from the lightning.
On this occasion, the state of conservation of the stone and bronze surfaces of the equestrian statue and the sculptural groups was checked, and the work was maintained, with cleaning, plastering and protection of the surfaces, in order to prolong over time the beneficial effects of the previous restoration carried out in 2011, on the occasion of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy.
At the end of the intervention, an innovative device was installed to protect the monument from atmospheric discharges based on the principles of the "Faraday cage".
