Project description

The project involves the redevelopment of Piazza Augusto Imperatore with the restoration of the Mausoleum of Augustus.

The intervention is part of the redevelopment of the Historic City within the Aurelian Walls and, more specifically, of the recovery of the system of public spaces of the historic Trident of Rome - via di Ripetta, via del Corso, via del Babuino - initiated by the Municipal Administration in the early years of the new millennium.

The redevelopment of Piazza Augusto Imperatore consists of two functional lots, both of which are in progress, and which were awarded in the 2006 International Design Competition.

The intervention area of the first lot, started in May 2020, concerns the southern area of the square and includes the following works:

  • the construction of the two ring roads, one on the east and one on the west, which will connect the urban area to the archaeological access to the Mausoleum;
  • the construction of a cafeteria/info point at the southern end of the square;
  • the consolidation of the foundation embankment of the Church of San Rocco and of the pillar of the passage between it and the Church of San Girolamo dei Croati;
  • the construction of a sewerage system for the entire area and a new rainwater lifting system connected to the existing sewer in Via di Ripetta.

The second lot concerns the redevelopment of the outer ring of the Mausoleum and includes for the construction of:

  • "piazze d'affaccio" (overlooking squares), equipped with green areas and located at the contemporary urban level;
  • itineraries to visit the archaeological portion;

a new pedestrian walkway to access the Mausoleum from the street (northern front).
