Demolition and Reconstruction of the preschool Tullia Zevi School District

Implementing party

Roma Capitale

Project description

The preschool of the Tullia Zevi Institute, building in via Agatarco is located in the neighbourhood called “Casal Palocco”, included in the Municipality X of Rome.
The district, conceived as an innovative urban planning project around the 1950s, is characterised by the total and harmonious integration of its architecture and the surrounding natural environment. The project area of approximately 5,000 square metres is flat and rich in greenery, with the presence of tall trees.
The current architectural structures on the site consist of three old prefabricated halls that are in an antiquated condition and cannot be improved even with extraordinary maintenance work. Therefore, the demolition and reconstruction of a single building would meet the requirements of effectiveness and efficiency with a lower cost solution and the use of environmentally sustainable materials.
At present, the type of construction described, i.e. three separate small halls, does not allow the school management to set up “full-time” shifts (due to the lack of space for the canteen and kitchen).
The intervention will involve the construction of a new building, with significant energy savings for air conditioning. In addition, it will allow the creation of additional space for kitchens, canteen and laboratories, optimising the common areas and offering a higher quality service.
The new school building will have the characteristics to be considered a “building of strategic interest whose functionality during seismic events is of fundamental importance for civil protection purposes”.
The project will include, in agreement with needs indicated by school staff, the implementation of:

  • a connective entrance space, with a portico area in front;
  • no. 4 classrooms/sections for teaching purposes for a maximum total of 120 pupils;
  • no.1 classroom for free/exercise activities;
  • no. 1 office;
  • no. 1 canteen room laboratory;
  • cleaning room/kitchen technical room;
  • storage room/kitchen pantry;
  • user services, accessible service;
  • facilities/changing room for kitchen staff with independent access;
  • services for educators.

The nature of the new generation prefabricated structure will ensure high quality and performance standards of thermal and acoustic insulation, resulting in improved energy performance of the building.
