Construction of the "Casa del Pellegrino" in the farmhouse of the former Mill along Via Francigena
Implementing party
Project description
The project consists of the creation of a Pilgrim's House within the Parco della Caffarella. To this end, a farmhouse and its adjoining service rooms, located in Via della Caffarella, near via Appia Antica, will be restored: The Farmhouse of the former mill. Reachable by a dirt and tree-lined path of about one and a half kilometres, the Farmhouse of the former mill is a two-storey building with eight rooms. It was built between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, covering an area of about 450 square metres indoors and 35 square metres of terraces. The building and the land are part of the heritage of the Fondazione Ecclesiasiastica eredi Gerini. The Farmhouse of the former mill was for the most part rented by the Ente Parco and restored in 2002.
Today, it is equipped with completely restored roofs, four bathrooms, including two with showers on the upper floor, a kitchen, and a room measuring 30 square meters for overnight stays. On the ground floor, during the excavation work, the remains of the sixteenth-century wool mill emerged, which is now accessible. The ground floor bathrooms are both accessible to people with disabilities. The acquisition of the “entire” farmhouse will allow for the creation of an additional accommodation space on the ground floor, also accessible to people with disabilities. The project also includes the reclamation of the surrounding territory to fully restore the usability of the external area, where overnight camping will be permitted. Extraordinary maintenance interventions are planned for the existing vegetation, including the restoration of tree and shrub species. The current dilapidated fence will be removed and replaced with a new iron mesh fence with chestnut posts, featuring a single entrance at civic number 25. The new "Casa del Pellegrino" built in the Farmhouse of the former mill will have a capacity of 25 beds.
