Project description
The intervention planned in Via Guido Reni will cover an area of over 5 hectares, previously used as military headquarters and located in the Flaminio district of Rome, in front of the Maxxi.
The project will focus on the creation of a new neighbourhood divided into two parts: a public one, which will host the Science Museum on an area of approximately 20,000 square metres, and a private one, of 45,000 square metres and reserved to private building rights.
In the private part, the old military warehouses will be replaced with a new, mainly pedestrian, urban fabric. The latter will be structured around the Science Museum square, which will host the structure itself, a medium-sized commercial area, and an underground garage. Moreover, the construction of several buildings will be planned, crossed by equipped green paths and with an underground parking space. There will also be a square dedicated to the new neighbourhood library.
The variety of functions of the project includes residences for a total area of 35,000 square metres, of which 6,000 intended for social purposes; a 6,000 square metres accommodation facility and 4,000 square metres of commercial spaces distributed between the Science Museum square and the base of the residential buildings in Via Guido Reni, for a total of 45,000 square metres.
The two sectors of the project are closely intertwined, both from a financial (the revenues deriving from the private sector will contribute significantly to covering the costs for the construction of the Museum) and scheduling standpoint (the start of works on both sectors is expected by the end of 2025).
The implementation of this project, selected as the result of a design competition which saw the participation of over 240 different firms from 20 countries, will have a positive impact on the entire Flaminio district, making an area until now closed to the public finally accessible, thus allowing a better use of the entire neighbourhood by pedestrians.
