Redevelopment of Piazza Risorgimento
Implementing party
Project description
The Jubilee intervention provides for the redevelopment and reorganisation of the mobility of Piazza Risorgimento with the aim of increasing the pedestrian precinct and the area's reception capacity.
With an area of about 18,000 square metres, Piazza Risorgimento is a strategic place for the social life of the neighbourhood and for the inflows and outflows from St Peter's Square, representing a crucial point for welcoming pilgrims during the Jubilee. The intervention involves the pedestrianisation of the road to the Vatican Walls, the planting of more trees—safeguarding existing ones—and the increase of permeable surfaces. New pavilions will also be built for both temporary activities related to jubilee events and services, such as bathrooms and refreshment points. The new viability will ensure the east-west crossing in both directions, with lanes for public transport and private traffic. With the new road structure, the intersection between road and pedestrian traffic in the Ottaviano/San Pietro direction will be limited to a single crossing regulated by traffic lights. The relocation of the bus terminus with the definition of passing lines and the displacement of stops in the areas surrounding the square are also part of the project. Piazza Risorgimento will also have a new public lighting system and will be affected by interventions to adapt the rainwater drainage system and to rebuild the road and pedestrian pavement. The works will be organised in two phases. The first phase aims to make the square accessible to tourists and pilgrims and includes, also through temporary works, the construction of new pedestrian paths and the remodulation of road traffic. The second phase aims to complete all the architectural components and the redevelopment of the external areas.
To ensure the safety and full accessibility of the area, the construction site is scheduled to stop in 2025.
