Termini-Giardinetti-Tor Vergata Tramway (TGTV)
Implementing party
Project description
The Termini-Giardinetti-Tor Vergata tramway and metro line connects Termini Station to the neighbourhoods along via Casilina, up to the university/hospital hub of Tor Vergata. The partial overlap between tramway and Metro C strengthens the metro line creating a network effect that integrates the two infrastructures.
The line consists of three sections that combine existing and new lines: the route of the former Roma-Giardinetti railway (8.7 km, from Roma Laziali to Giardinetti), the external section to be built from scratch (3.6 km, from Giardinetti to Tor Vergata) and the internal section to be realised (0.5 km, from Roma Laziali to Piazza dei Cinquecento).
The intervention is part of the Rome Capital PUMS (Sustainable Mobility Urban Plan) approved in February 2022 and is included in the Metropolitan City of Roma Capitale PUMS approved on 13/12/2024.
The journey time of the entire route, 32 stops between Termini and Tor Vergata, will be covered in 45 minutes at an average speed of 17 km/h, which will be increased over time. The route will become competitive compared to other public transport options, such as metro A, C and metro tramway G.
The new trams of the latest generation will travel in a reserved location, using equipment designed to reduce vibrations and acoustic emissions.
