Widening of the road surface of Via Tiburtina
Implementing party
Project description
The project focused on widening Via Tiburtina from one to three lanes in each direction, one of which was reserved for public transportation, extending this extension to the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA). In addition, two additional lanes were created in the last stretch of about 1.7 kilometres, which reaches the intersection with Marco Simone Street. The project also included work on some adjacent side streets.
However, the progress of the intervention has been slowed considerably since the adjudication stage. Initially approved in 2004, during the Veltroni Council, the project was subsequently contracted out in 2009, under the Alemanno Council, with significant changes resulting in delays in the start of work. As of November 2021, Roma Capitale has stepped up efforts to complete the work by September 2023. This included the construction of a new bridge over Fosso di Pratolungo, the construction of the entire T4 section, extending from Via Settecamini/Casal Bianco to Via Marco Simone, and the creation of a large traffic circle at the intersection with Via Marco Simone.
Since 2021, several archaeological finds have been unearthed, some of them of considerable historical importance. This discovery made it necessary to work closely with the Special Superintendence of Rome in order to find alternative solutions to preserve these finds. The collaboration has brought some challenges, including delays in implementation time due to traffic restrictions. However, all critical issues overcome, it was possible to complete the work as planned, allowing the road to reopen to traffic on schedule.
