Caput Mundi: San Paolo alla Regola - restoration of the domus

Implementing party

Roma Capitale

Project description

The restoration and enhancement project of the archaeological complex of San Paolo alla Regola includes a series of interventions aimed at making accessible the parts currently not open to visitors, improving conservation and enhancing the important historical and archaeological heritage of the site.

One of the central aspects of the project concerns the creation of new itineraries, which will allow visitors to explore the entire archaeological complex in an organised and informative way. Areas that cannot be visited will be identified and equipped through archaeological excavation interventions that will allow new finds and structures to be highlighted and enhanced.

The restoration interventions will be carried out on the masonry and metal elements of the complex, through the restoration and conservation of the walls, ensuring structural stability and preserving the original appearance of the architectural elements. Measures will be adopted to improve the ventilation and dehumidification systems of the rooms, in order to favour ideal conditions for the conservation of the finds and frescoes. Technical verification will be carried out to evaluate the state of the structures and the intervention methods.

The project will include interventions to improve the accessibility of the site, allowing all visitors, including those with disabilities or reduced mobility, to fully enjoy the archaeological complex.

Public assistance services will be developed, such as historical models and explanatory panels, offering detailed information on the historical and archaeological context of the site and helping to make the visitor experience more engaging and informative.

Finally, the external space of the archaeological complex will be redeveloped to create a welcoming and attractive environment, through the arrangement of gardens, the creation of pedestrian paths and the installation of appropriate street furniture.
