Caput Mundi: Restoration of the Arch of the Four Winds located in Villa Doria Pamphilj
Implementing party
Project description
Project Description: The intervention aims at protecting and enhancing the Arch of the Four Winds and the two quadrangular plan avant-corps that complement it. The intervention will be carried out through a partial renovation of the complex, compatible with the historical nature of the building and its museum-like inclination.
As for the state of conservation, a significant state of deterioration of the non-structural parts of the building is observed, with prevalent plaster detachment from the outdoor cross vaults and parts of cofferered stucco due to the heavy infiltration of rainwater from the flat roof. This also caused the putrescence and the damages to the indoor wooden staircase that led to the top terrace.Moreover, the interiors have been remodelled over the years, which has compromised the original arrangement of spaces and heights.
The restoration progress will include:
- historical-stylistic restoration;
- roof waterproofing works;
- partial modification of rainwater disposal methods;
- re-plastering of the outdoor cross vaults and the cofferered stucco portions of the intrados of the central vault;
- installation of all devices that can improve rainwater drainage and facilitate maintenance work;
- restoration of the vertical elements inside the two building bodies;
- restoration interventions and interior finishing works;
- verification and adjustment of electrical, water, intrusion, fire and video surveillance systems;
- integration of indoor and outdoor lighting system;
- integration of heating and air conditioning systems;
- cleaning and weeding of the outdoor floor with restoration of missing parts.
