The conservation project was carried out with the aim of preserving, enhancing, and improving the monument while ensuring safe public access.
Specifically, the following work was completed:
- Restoration of the internal and external stone surfaces of the four-sided portico, fences, and access stairways, including washing, cleaning, disinfection, weeding, extraction of soluble salts, removal of deteriorated mortar, and application of new mortar;
- Cleaning of the paved surfaces, including washing, disinfection, weeding, and, where needed, repointing to seal cracks or missing joints;
- Maintenance of the bronze surfaces of the four braziers, including cleaning, corrosion inhibitor treatment, repair of cracks or gaps, and application of a protective coating;
- Repositioning of the paving slabs at the base of the stairway to ensure visitor safety, including the disassembly and reinstallation of slabs and the repair of the manhole area leading to the service rooms;
- Removal of sections of monumental travertine fencing on the north side, followed by reinstallation in alignment at a higher level to prevent interference from tree roots;
- Repair of the access door to the service areas;
- Removal of old paint layers and repainting of all metal elements in the area, such as gates, fences, and doors;
- Modification of the rainwater drainage system, including the installation of new grates to collect water across the entire paved surface.
