Caput Mundi:Extraordinary maintenance of some monumental fountains in the City Centre of Rome - Trevi Fountain (Fontana di Trevi)
Implementing party
Project description
The maintenance work on the fountain became necessary due to deterioration caused by the high pedestrian traffic and the specific microclimatic conditions, which have favoured the formation of biological patinas, weedy vegetation and limestone deposits on the areas most exposed to water contact.
The intervention, lasting approximately three months, involved a thorough cleaning of the stone surfaces in the lower part of the monument, particularly the rocky formation and the area between the edge of the basin and the access steps. The plastering of the joints was repaired in various sections of the fountain to preserve its structural and aesthetic integrity, and the basin was waterproofed.
Furthermore, Acea carried out extraordinary maintenance on the entire recirculation system, pumps, and electromechanical equipment to optimise water circulation.
The monument can now be visited through a new system that allows visitors to admire it while avoiding overcrowding.
The experience of the walkway installed during the maintenance work highlighted the appreciation of both residents and tourists for a higher-quality and more direct visit. The new visitor flow management system ensures the proper enjoyment of the fountain, which has always been subjected to unregulated and excessively invasive foot traffic, putting its delicate materials at risk.
Access, limited to a maximum of approximately 400 people at a time, is provided via the central staircase, while the exit is located at Via dei Crociferi.
Visits will be regulated as follows: every day from 9 am to 9 pm (last access at 8.30 pm); on Mondays and Fridays from 12 pm to allow for coin collection operations; every second Monday from 2 pm to 9 pm to allow for the emptying and cleaning of the basin. Free access will be permitted from 9 pm onwards.
Dedicated staff will be present at the entrance, exit and inside the monument to assist with visitor reception and security.
Visitors will be free to move around the fountain's basin area; however, sitting on the edge of the basin, eating, drinking or smoking will not be allowed.
The panels at the entrance and the totems on the sides of the square include a QR code that provides historical information about the fountain.
