Planetarium of Rome
Implementing party
Project description
The Planetarium of Rome offers everyone the opportunity to admire the magnificence of the cosmos and fully enjoy the wonder of the starry sky, free from artificial light pollution. Visitors can immerse themselves in the beauty of the universe and its evolution, reliving the phases of space exploration, flying over the most hidden nebulae, and admiring our planet from a unique point of view.
They can attend specially designed scientific shows, presented by the Planetarium's astronomers, with their gaze focused on the large dome and accompanied by live narration from the astronomers. To provide a completely new immersive experience, the Planetarium of Rome uses the most advanced visualization technologies. Unlike the old optomechanical projection system, which was limited to reproducing the starry sky as seen from Earth, the new advanced "Sky Explorer" software, thanks to a sophisticated system of 4K resolution video projectors with very high contrast, can realistically reconstruct the surfaces of Earth, the Moon, and Mars, as well as galaxies and nebulae. The possibility to store large amounts of data and perform real-time updates based on astronomical discoveries will also allow visitors to follow the latest findings from the scientific community.
Renovation work has been carried out, which involved the atrium with the external propylea and staircases, the service areas, and the offices. The seats have been replaced, but the circular arrangement has been maintained to enhance the immersive "journey" experience. Additionally, the large surface of the dome has been cleaned, an hemispherical screen of 300 square meters with a diameter of 14 meters.
