Restoration of votive aedicules in the historic centre of Rome

Implementing party

Giubileo2025

Project description

The intervention includes the restoration of some of the existing aedicules in the historic centre. Votive aedicules have been present in the city of Rome since antiquity. They were believed to protect neighbourhoods with apotropaic and propitiatory functions. With the advent of Christianity, they multiplied—there are currently approximately 470 in the historic centre alone—until they became a defining element of the urban landscape. Beginning with the 1975 Jubilee and up to the Great Jubilee of 2000, the Municipality of Rome, together with the Vicariate and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, promoted their knowledge and valorisation through study, research and cataloguing activities, and carried out the restoration of numerous examples of this important and special artistic heritage. The term "holy shrine" refers to numerous artefacts and a few small chapels that have as a unifying element the presence of a sacred image inside them. The forms vary greatly: from glazed majolica plates and simple medallions with stucco frames decorated with ribbons to more complex solutions, where architectural (pillars, cornices, tympanums, etc.) and sculptural (cherubs, rays, etc.) elements come together to create spectacular and scenic compositions, as in the case of Baroque aediculae.
