Design and realisation of interventions planned in the Pietralata, Tiburtino, Centocelle and Quadraro directional fields in implementation of the approved executive tools - Centocelle PARK

Project description

The redevelopment focused on two main aspects: forestation, with an increase in tree density and the planting of new trees to define a new edge of the Park, and the reorganisation of paths and entrances to reconnect the Park with the City and the various surrounding neighbourhoods (Quadraro Don Bosco, Alessandrino, Tuscolano, Centocelle, Prenestino Labicano).

The project initiatives returned to the city a strategic place to improve the environmental quality of a large urban area. The project included the construction of new green infrastructure and landscape restoration, including new services and sports and recreational facilities. A particular focus was paid to the renovation of the former gas station between Via Casilina and Viale Palmiro Togliatti, which has become an important access point from the metro line C stop.

The initial phase of the project included the planting of around 500 trees to create an “urban forest” and the installation of a children's play area. At the same time, the executive project to create new paths and entrances, including those on Via di Centocelle, Viale Togliatti and Via Santi Romano, was implemented.

Activities included the construction of a large sports park on an existing landing strip, with basketball, tennis, table tennis, volleyball courts, and lanes for athletics. A new park square  was created at the main entrance on Via Casalina, with an interactive fountain. Entrances and infographics were designed to make the Park easily identifiable.

The railway track fallen into disuse, was transformed into a botanical and cycling path, with access to underground galleries through new entrances and guided tours. The abandoned cut railway was enhanced as a “natural monument” of remarkable biodiversity, providing additional significant spaces within the park.
