Extraordinary maintenance and redevelopment of the gardens of Piazza dei Navigatori

Implementing party

Roma Capitale – VIII Municipality

Project description

The intervention area is located in Piazza dei Navigatori and borders Via delle Sette Chiese, Via Cristoforo Colombo and an adjacent market area.

In 2023, the area of Piazza dei Navigatori gardens was redeveloped through the rationalisation of its functions, paths and green areas in order to create an aggregate space and improve pedestrian flows. Starting from the transformation of a deteriorating area, a new pole of social attraction has developed, based on the identification of a new pedestrian axis that takes into account existing centralities such as the bus stop and the market, as well as the natural crossing route rooted in time and the role of the historic building that dominates the square.

The establishment of this new axis has entailed a redistribution of spaces destined for green areas and paths, outlining a hierarchy of paths and rest areas, also improving the relationship between Piazza dei Navigatori and the historic building adjacent to it. The new pedestrian route begins at the bus stop along Via Cristoforo Colombo, proceeding parallel to the main front of the building. It then opens onto a large square, in the centre of the historic building, and ends with an opening at the entrance to the market area and another bus stop along Via delle Sette Chiese. The central square represents the heart of the gardens and is conceived as a social gathering point for the residents of the neighbourhood.
