Pedestrianisation of Via Appia Antica: Mausoleo di Cecilia Metella and Castrum Caetani segments

Implementing party

Roma Capitale

Project description

The goal of the intervention is to create easier access to the archaeological and natural areas of the Appia Antica, while guaranteeing the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, as well as providing access to local financial and residential activities. This intervention is applied to a small but strategic portion of the territory, between numbers 159 and 169 of Via Appia Antica, to create a pedestrian island. This intervention will inhibit the improper use of the Via Appia Antica monument, acting as the first operational step for the subsequent limitations on the previous and following segments. The following interventions will be carried out in this area:

  • Creation of the pedestrian island with the prohibition of vehicular traffic crossing;
  • Redevelopment of the area immediately next to the Church of St Nicholas;
  • Implementation of accommodations with a green and natural quality throughout the area;
  • Removal of pavement.
