The idea for the construction of the Castel Sant'Angelo Underpass was born because of the 2025 Jubilee. The intention was to convert the entire area of Castel Sant'Angelo into a pedestrian-only street and create a pedestrian corridor from the castle, to Via della Conciliazione, ending in San Pietro.
To build the Underpass, the dimensions and route of the lower right collector had to be modified, a task entrusted to ACEA ATO2.
A study was also initiated to evaluate several design alternatives for the extension of the existing underpass from Piazza Pia to Passetto di Borgo, by undergrounding the level road and creating a pedestrian surface between Castel Sant'Angelo and Via della Conciliazione. The works have also been carried out for the surface redevelopment of the public space that connects the area of Castel Sant'Angelo with Via della Conciliazione and San Pietro.
During the construction of the Piazza Pia underpass, archaeological findings emerged, which made it necessary to carry out previously unplanned interventions to enhance the relocated archaeological context. The interventions were carried out on the basis of the requirements established during the services conference for the approval of the executive project. Click here to find out the details.
